Não seria errado dizer que muitos artistas do Jazz, como Nina Simone, foram grandes expressões da Soul Music. Assim como outros que transitaram por vários gêneros, tiveram também sua significativa importânica nesse segmento, tais como: Ike & Tina Turner, Barry White, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, e até
Michael Jackson, entre muitos outros.

Pode-se dizer que, a Soul Music começou entre o fim dos anos 50 e o começo dos anos 60. Mais propriamente no Estado do Tennessee, Estados Unidos, na cidade de Memphis.

A mistura do Jazz, Rythm and Blues (R&B) e a música Gospel, originou esse estilo inconfundível, que
viria a ser a expressão solidária dos negros, o orgulho de raça na nação americana, que procurava o fim da segregação, encontrando a sua identidade e espiritualidade.

Seus precurssores foram, sem dúvida, Ray Charles, James Brown e Sam Cooke.
